LAW STUDENTS AND PRIDE: AN INSEPARABLE DUO? By Amusan Tawfiiq ’Lekan

Image
In so many times in the past, I had heard people say that the law students are a bunch of prideful and arrogant creatures. Some would even, for the heck of it, go as far as describing them as “a cluster of confused braggadocios” . This myth of the law students being touted or dubbed as prideful creatures has been so much popularized to the extent that it now lives “rent-free” in the heads of not just students in the University (who, at least, will have the chance to share the academic environment with them) but also the students across other cadres of tertiary institution like Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and so on (whose paths may never even cross those of the law students throughout their academic sojourn on campus). Having attained that towering mythical status, shall we then feign an ignorance of the proverbial truism “there are always two sides to a coin” ? Doing that, of course, will presuppose addressing the issue with a rather non-objective mind. A du...

POLYGAMOUS MARRIAGE UNDER THE NIGERIAN LAW: WHAT THE LAW HAS TO SAY BY MUHIBUDEEN QOSIM ATANDA

1.0 Introduction Marriage is, indeed, the legitimate means of securing the right to cohabitate between opposite sexes in an "ideal" territory, Nigeria inclusive. And as a matter of fact, in Nigerian law, there are essentially two types of marriage: monogamous (which wholly depicts one man and one wife) and polygamous (which permits more than one wife married to just one man). It is also worth noting that the character and occurrences in these two marriage systems (monogamous and polygamous) are fundamentally different. In fact, different types of legislation regulate the two systems under the Nigerian corpus juris. Thus, in order to avoid any misunderstanding, it is critical to keep this dualism in mind when considering Nigerian marriage rules. [1] Monogamous marriage is classified as the statutory recognized marriage in Nigeria. The terms of the Marriage Act, [2] a federal law that applies to all states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, strictly govern...

Judges Are Kings in a Court of Law: They Do No Wrong By Amusan Tawfiiq ’Lekan

INTRODUCTION Pitiable and abysmal won’t do justice to the description of how muddled and barricaded one set of individuals called Politicians have made every path through which the common man on the street— the ordinary citizen— could spontaneously access and get justice from the court of law whenever the situation now demands in Nigeria. These individuals have almost succeeded in converting the crop of superior courts in Nigeria to a warehouse for the compilation of political shenanigans— pilling up the court’s registry with a country of suits, filling all manner of applications anyone can think of, before and after election. Frivolity never existed in their dictionary. Even when they finally get to the Supreme Court, they will still wish there could be another court they could approach.  Yet, at every slightest apportionment of anything contrary to what they expect from court, they go all out desecrating the sacredness of this same institution which they would h...
